The towing device for a vehicle equipped with a boot lid (1) and/or bonnet comprises a towing eye unit which includes a towing eye (2) and a housing (4) for it connected to the vehicle. When not in use the towing eye unit is at least partially covered by a fairing section which is the boot lid or bonnet itself. The towing eye is detachably connected to the towing eye housing, whereby the towing eye has a threaded shank (3) which screws into a threaded hole in the housing. A support (5) is provided to fix the boot lid and/or bonnet in a predetermined hinged position. An Independent claim is included for a procedure for the operating of a towing device.
