The device for the fixing of especially a hydraulic slide valve spool (K) has an engagement face (F) with a number of relatively parallel grooves (2) separated by ribs (3), extending transversely to the direction of movement and defining predetermined travel distances. At least two locking components (B1,B2,B3) in the form of spring-loaded balls are simultaneously elastically pressed against the engagement face. At each travel distance position at least one locking component is in full engagement with a groove and at least one is in partial engagement with a groove, so the number of travel distance positions is multiplied. An Independent claim is included for a hydraulic slide valve with the aforesaid device for fixing of the spool in defined positions.
