A winding system for sheet material, e.g. paper, onto a roll has two parallel support rollers (2, 3) to carry the weight of the roll which is wound onto a roll core (8) in movable supports (9). The increasing weight of the roll is carried partly on a compressed air cushion created between the support rollers and contained between two side plates (18, 19) which are swung into position on tilt drives (13) each side of the cushion. The side plates are fitted with flexible seals and are swung aside when a new roll is started, with the roll core lower on the support rollers, and are swung into position when the roll diameter reaches a set value.
