A transport container (10), especially a tubular container, for dangerous materials, e.g. radioactive fuel elements, comprises a housing which is longer than the component (20) to be transported, so different types of end closure (16) can be used to seal the end opening. The closure is welded onto the housing, and each time the closure is removed the tubular housing is shortened. Spacers (26, 28, 30, 32, 34) are located between the closure and the component being transported. The container is opened by cutting an end section (42) of the tube.
