The device has a housing (10) which is pivotably mounted so that it is movable from a normal position in which it is vertical, to an alarm position in which the door handle is able to move. The housing is formed on a surface (12) which the door handle (2) abuts when operated, so that when further force is applied to the door handle, the housing pivots from the normal position to the alarm position. The device includes an alarm which emits an acoustic or visual alarm signal when the housing is pivoted.
