A transgenic non-human animal (A) with a phenotype that reproduces some of the aspects of human Parkinson's disease and contains a gene (I) for parkin (II) from which exon 3 has been partially deleted, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) cells obtained from (A); (2) screening for compounds useful for treating neurodegenerative diseases, using (A); (3) protein having a 106 amino acid (aa) sequence reproduced; and (4) DNA molecules having sequences (13; 318 bp) and (15; 321 bp).
