A teaching system for presenting and manipulating clozed text comprises a display for displaying a passage of text and a selector input device for selecting individual words within the passage of text. A processor is configured to cause selected words to be replaced on the display screen by a gap of the same length, preferably including an underline known as a cloze underline. The processor is also configured to allow selection of the cloze underline and for text to be input and displayed centred within the cloze underline gap.
