PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the reaction time in the preparation of a polymer to aim to efficiently manufacture lenses by incorporating monomeric structural units derived from a vinyl lactam and a vinylic crosslinking agent into a copolymer chain. ;SOLUTION: A desired water soluble prepolymer comprises water soluble crosslinkable prepolymer structural units, i.e., units derived from: (a) a vinyl lactam; (b) a vinyl alcohol; optionally (c) a lower alkanecarboxylic acid vinyl ester; (d) a vinylic crosslinking agent; and optionally (e) a vinylic photoinitiator. In order to prepare this prepolymer, a vinyl lactam (a) - lower alkanecarboxylic acid vinyl ester (c) prepolymer is subjected to a partial or complete acidic or basic hydrolysis and then, the resulting hydrolyzate is simultaneously or continuously derivatized with a compound derived from the crosslinking component (d) and, optionally a compound derived from the vinylic photoinitiator component (e) to obtain this prepolymer.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
