The invention relates to a method and a device for the permanent and automatic monitoring of temperature distributions and/or temperature anomalies on the basis of distributed fibre-optic temperature sensing, as well to the use of such a method. According to the invention, local temperature extremes, i.e. minimum or maximum values, are detected by evaluation without numeric derivations. The device for monitoring ascending or supply pipes surrounded by an annular space allows for an especially economical monitoring of the safety of installations under pressure, especially in the field of compressed gas storage. Moreover, the position of an underground watershed or the direction and flow rate of the flows in flooded mine workings can be determined on the basis of fibre-optic temperature measurements. The defined arrangement of preferably vertical sensor cables inserted into boreholes also makes it possible to examine the density of base soils and lateral walls in building excavations. Finally, the virtually horizontal, meander-like arrangement of fibre-optic cables situated in several levels makes it possible to evaluate and control the efficacy and homogeneity of leaching processes in leaching dumps and fills.
