A calculation unit calculates probability density function (PDF), based on distribution of pixel values of pixels of input image signal. The average pixel values of respective pixels are calculated, and a function having predetermined slope according to range of average brightness value is calculated. A compensation unit re-establishes the distribution of pixel values, based on the calculated function. An independent claim is also included for adaptive brightness control method.
