An adaptive method for channel assignment (500) in a cellularmultiple access wireless communication system that has a cell station (100)and a number of subscriber stations (25, 26, 27) augments existing channelassignment protocol and thus is downward compatible with existing timedivision multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access(FDMA), code division multiple access (CDM,4), and spatial divisionmultiple access (SDMA) system protocols. The method adaptivelydetermines the power required for establishing an acceptable qualityconnection between a subscriber station (25) and the cell station (100) andprovides an early warning trial signal for advising existing connections thata new connection is about to be established. The early warning, followedby a pause, provides a basis and a time interval for taking correctiveinterference action if the trial signal indicates that an unacceptable levelof interference will result if the trial connection is established. Theearly warning signal and associated pause are useful for intracellular andintercellular interference management.
