EDITING SYSTEM FOR AUDIOVISUAL WORKS AND CORRESPONDING TEXT FOR TELEVISION NEWS

An audiovisual editing system associates segments of audiovisual materialswith relatedtext. The editing system permits an editor to edit the references to theaudiovisual materials of asegment and to edit the related text. An estimated time for reading therelated text aloud by thenewscaster is determined. This estimated time for reading the related text ofthe segment maybe compared to the actual duration of the audiovisual material of the segment.The difference inthe duration of the audiovisual material and the duration of the related textmay be displayed tothe editor. Also, any position in the text for a segment may be mapped to acorrespondingposition in time in the audiovisual material for the segment, and thisposition may be indicatedto the editor. Additionally, in response to edits of the related text of asegment, a correspondingediting operation can be automatically performed on the reference to theaudiovisualinformation of the segment. These capabilities help a journalist to edit anaudiovisual storythrough editing operations performed primarily on the script, copy or textthat is being preparedby the journalist.
