A perpendicular magnetic recording medium comprising at least a backing layer and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer on a nonmagnetic substrate is characterized in that the backing layer is composed of a soft magnetic film having a chemical composition represented by the following formula: (Fex-Co(1-x))k-(Siy-Ge(1-y))l-Bm-Cn. In this formula, x, y, k, l, m and n represent atomic fractions, x ≥ 0.7, y ≥ 0.5, 0.74 ≤ k ≤ 0.80, 0.05 ≤ l ≤ 0.20, 0.05 ≤ m ≤ 0.21, n ≤ 0.1, and k + l + m + n = 1.
