An apparatus and method for an ultrasonic medical device (11) to treat deep vein thrombosis. The ultrasonic medical device 11 comprises an ultrasonic probe (15) having a proximal end (31), a distal end (24) and a longitudinal axis therebetween. The ultrasonic probe (15) is inserted into a deep vein (75) of a leg(74), navigated adjacent to a thrombus (80) in the depp vein (75) and placed in communication with the thrombus (80). An ultrasonic energy source (99) is activated to generate a transverse ultrasonic vibration along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis of the ultrasonic probe (15). The transverse ultrasonic vibration creates a plurality of transverse nodes (40) and a plurality of transverse anti-nodes (42) along the longitudinal axis of the ultrasonic probe (15), generating cavitation in a medium surrounding the ultrasonic probe (15) to ablate the thrombus (80) and treat deep vein thrombosis.
