An optical recording medium sample fabricating method comprises a multiplayer body preparing step of preparing a multiplayer body including a substrate used for an optical recording medium and a functional layer formed adjacently to a first surface of the substrate and a substrate removing step of removing a predetermined portion of the substrate to expose the contact surface of the functional layer with the substrate. Since the functional layer of this optical recording medium sample has a surface copying after the first surface of the substrate, the profile exhibiting the grooves, lands, and surface roughness of the first surface of the substrate is accurately and precisely transferred to the exposed surface of the functional layer. By analyzing the exposed contact surface, the surface shape of the substrate can be grasped.
