The fuel cell comprises two electrodes and an ion exchange membrane (20) between them. The two electrodes are supported on the surfaces of a threaded rod, and a threaded socket. The membrane is suitably pre-formed to be accommodated between the nut and bolt shaped electrodes. The basic cell (1) for a fuel cell comprises two electrodes and an ion exchange membrane (20) between them. One of the two electrodes comprises a threaded rod (12) which is covered by the ion exchange membrane. The unit formed by the threaded rod and the ion exchange membrane (20) can be assembled by screwing it into the threaded surface of the other electrode (28). The membrane has a threaded surface, such that it can be accommodated between the two screw threads of the electrodes. The step of the thread on all three elements is the same. The ion exchange membrane may be a pre-formed film. The electrodes may be formed by deposits formed firstly on the threaded rod (12), and secondly on the threaded socket (28) of the substrate.
