Navigation unit for a vehicle in which a journey target is selected from a target location list, whereby in a first selection step a preselection of the area containing the target location is made by input of a short label made up of a few characters at most, while in a second selection step the location is selected from a list of locations provided from the selected target area. An independent claim is made for a method for selecting a journey target or destination for a navigation unit.
