Fumes are diverted away from the fire (5) using a ventilator (14, 20, 24) and air drawn in by suction at a location well away from the fire is directed at the region beneath the fumes in front of the fire, forming an air curtain beneath the roof (6) between the fire and emergency exit (11) so that the latter is kept clear of smoke and fumes. Hoses (12, 13, 16-19, 23, 25) are used to suck in the air and remove the fumes.
