When an accelerator pedal is displaced in a range between a start position and a maximum position, the restoring torque assumes a number of different torque levels (M0,M1,M2,M3). Each torque level corresponds to a driving state of the vehicle, with defined supply of fuel and air to the combustion engine. Preferably, there are at least three different torque levels, corresponding to the driving states: slowing down, constant speed and acceleration.
