Material for absorption of trihalomethanes and AOX and for removing chloramines from water, comprises active carbon powder and/or other adsorbents (e.g. zeolites) plus sodium hydrogen sulfate and/or other acid salts and/or acids and/or water and/or tabletting aids such as talcum. Material (I) for the absorption of trihalomethanes and AOX and for removing chloramines from water, especially from swimming baths and from water for baths or spas, comprises active carbon powder and/or other adsorbents such as perlite and/or diatomaceous earth (kieselguhr) and/or zeolites, plus sodium hydrogen sulfate and/or other acid salts and/or acids and/or water and/or tabletting aids such as talcum. An independent claim is also included for a method for improving the adsorption efficiency of adsorbents (especially active carbon as above) by the application of an electromagnetic field, in which the electrodes for producing the field are insulated and current flow only occurs due to the increased adsorption efficiency, corresponding to the additional heat of adsorption released (no electro-sorption); the improvement in efficiency is not limited to adsorption from aqueous solutions but is also naturally applicable to air filtration.
