The car safety system incorporates optical detectors (10, 12) for objects (22) in areas (14, 16) in front of the car. These feed signals (26, 28) to a computer (20) which calculates the size and mass of the object and activates the brakes or an airbag. An independent claim is included for a method for detecting objects in front of a car using the system.
