Process for operating a compressed air supply system comprises feeding air compressed in a compressor unit (2) into a compressed air distribution system (5), determining the operating pressure prevailing in the compressed air distribution system, and switching the compressor unit according to the operating pressure. When a pre-determined maximum operating pressure is reached, air is at least temporarily released via a valve (7) on opening of the valve and the compressor unit is switched off in a time-delayed manner after the valve is opened, and/or when a pre-determined minimum operating pressure is reached, the compressor unit is switched on and the valve is switched so that compressed air is released at least for a short-time via the valve and/or fed into the compressed air distribution system. An independent claim is also included for a compressed air supply system.
