The device has at least one stop element associated with each of the doors (12) or flaps that can be moved between an at least partly recessed rest position and a working position in which it protrudes out of a surface of the door or flap. The stop element is in the rest position with the door or flap closed and can be moved to the working position with the door at least partly open and/or if it approaches a locking mechanism and/or the locking mechanism is operated. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of protecting pivotable doors or flaps, especially of motor vehicles.
