PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high purity mandelic acid useful as a medicinal and agrochemical row material, a liquid crystal material and a reagent for optical resolution, and to provide crystal of mandelic acid.;SOLUTION: The method for producing the high purity mandelic acid comprises acid hydrolysis of mandelonitrile, aging of the produced mandelic acid in a state of precipitating a part thereof, and recovery of the crystal of the mandelic acid. The crystal of mandelic acid contains the dimer of not more than 0.1% (surface percentage) based on 100 surface% total of the mandelic acid and the dimer thereof in high performance liquid chromatographic measurement.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
