PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a character direction identification device capable of achieving character direction identification processing at high speed without increasing the calculation load or storage capacity. PSOLUTION: Features showing arrangement information of rectangles per line in character line of a document image (e.g., the height of a start point, rectangle size (height, width), black pixel density, distance from an adjacent rectangle, etc.) are quantized and converted into symbols, and the tendency of arrangement thereof is learnt from features showing arrangement information of rectangles per line in a training line in an erected document image, and recorded. The learnt electing directional learning tendency is applied to the result obtained by successively executing rotating conversion processing to rectangles per line in a test line that is a character direction identifying object line, whereby the easiness of appearance by character directions of this line is evaluated to determine the character direction. According to this, since the character direction of the character direction identification object line is classified by the arrangement information of rectangles per line, the character direction identification processing can be performed at high speed without increasing the calculation load or storage capacity.
