PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow each contour pixel to impart directional code capable of expressing a smooth contour direction by using a preliminarily decided directional code.;SOLUTION: Four kinds of directional codes notched at each 45° for expressing horizontal, vertical, right-upward, and right-downward directional codes are decided. At first, a smoother contour direction than the quantization notch of the directional code is extracted for each contour pixel. Then, each extracted smooth contour direction is decomposed into two directional code overlap. Decomposition coefficients are applied to the two directional codes obtained as the result of decomposition, and the two directional codes are multiplied by each decomposition coefficient, and a vector sum is calculated for each contour pixel.
