PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for discriminating a car model, and a storage medium storing the method allowing real-time processing and having less restriction on the installation conditions of a camera. SOLUTION: This device for discriminating the car model has the camera 1 and electronic equipment 2. The electronic equipment 2 comprises an image signal processor 4, a model storage device 5, a model projection processor 6 and a discriminating device 7. The image signal processor 4 extracts a vehicle region T including a vehicle, from an image picked up by the camera 1. The model storage device 5 stores every vehicle model as a three-dimensional shape model. The model projection processor 6 reads the vehicle model from the model storage device 5 and converts the read vehicle model into an image viewed from picked-up position in the picked-up image. The discriminating device 7 obtains the area of the converted vehicle model, the area of the vehicle region T and the intersecting area of these areas and discriminates the car model (a large car, a standard-sized car or a two-wheeler). The reduction of a calculation cost and the like can be attained by using the three-dimensional shape model as the vehicle model.
