Prepn. of dimethyl vinylphosphonate (I) from dimethyl 2-acetoxyethane-phosphonate (II) by gas phase thermal cracking comprises vaporising (II) and cracking to (I) and acetic acid at 400-700 degrees C, without catalyst.
