The invention relates to a method and device for operating a diesel engine using a fuel comprising vegetable oils or recycled vegetable oils. Fuel is taken from a tank, filtered through a fuel filter (14, 16) and injected into the cylinders through injection nozzles by means of an injection pump (22). Any excess fuel is returned. Fuel is transferred from the tank (10) through pressure resistant fiber filters (14, 16) by means of a compression pump (12) to a storage reservoir (18) where it is ultrasonically irradiated. Fuel is drawn out of the storage reservoir (18) via the injection pump (22) and excess fuel is returned to the storage reservoir (18).
