The invention relates to a method for cleaning and storing tools for applying fluid materials which are irreversibly hardenable by the action of environmental factors, for example adhesives, polyurethane foams and sealing agents. The inventive method consists in placing a hermetically closable device for discharging a material from the tool in a vessel partially filled with a material dissolving fluid prior to the hardening thereof for the totality of a storing time in such a way that the material discharge area is permanently submersed in the solvent. Said method makes enables to avoid the total cleaning (inside and outside) of the tool after each use thereof without decreasing the leaktightness of the material discharging device. A device for carrying out said method which is used in spray guns for applying mounting polyurethane foam is also disclosed.
