The hybrid vehicle includes an IC engine (1) connected to a transmission (3) via a clutch (2), a primary differential gear (11) for driving wheels (17,18), a transfer gearing (20) for driving wheels (36,37) through a pair of propeller shafts (26,27) and an electric motor (31) between and connectible to the propeller shafts by further clutches (29,30,32) in series with each other. The vehicle can be powered by the electric motor alone in two-wheel drive (front or rear) and four-wheel-drive modes or by the engine in 2WD or 4WD modes or by both together. Regenerative braking can be used to charge capacitors (38) and/or batteries (39).
