The mantle (1) of a press roller (2), at the web press section of a papermaking machine, has a cylindrical rotating mantle surface. The mantle has a radial spring elasticity and is pliable. The mantle has at least two different zones (12,13) along the axial direction (A), with different characteristics. The first zone (12) is in contact with the running paper web, and the second zone is next to the paper contact section. A third zone (14) is next to the second zone, as a spring elastic transit to the axial carrier (5). The first mantle zone has a hardness of 75-95 Shore A and up to 60 Shore D with a smoothness of 0.5-5.0 mu m.
