The method involves selecting at least one parameter which influences the propagation of oscillations in a medium (200). The selectable parameter is the spacing and/or angle of a reflector relative to the sensor element. During the test, the composition, temperature, density or viscosity of the medium may be variable. An independent claim is included for an apparatus for testing a sensor element.
