The unit has a step tread section (11), which completely covers the stairs in an installed position of a step tread. A sidewall edge section (12) completely covers the stairs in an installed position of a sidewall edge. The sections are formed in one piece and have lower (14) and upper (13) layers, where the lower layer tuned towards the stairs is made of wood unit and the upper layer (13) is made up of cork. An independent claim is also included for a method for manufacturing a step unit for renovation of installed stairs.
