Vertical centrifugal separators (1) are dynamically stabilized, if mains power (12) is lost when the machine is running at high speed, by a control system (11) reconfiguring the motor (10) as a generator. The available power may be used to drive a feed pump (14) and supply feed or water to the centrifuge, until the speed slows to a level at which the consequences of imbalance are negligible. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a centrifuge, particularly a disk stack/nozzle, vertical rotational axis unit, where the motor is reconfigured as a generator if mains power is lost.
