The method involves supplying fuel to a heating device from a fuel supply. A cauterization phase is initiated by shutting down a dosing pump provided in the fuel supply. The fuel in the fuel supply is heated up, by the device, temporarily during the cauterization phase. The fuel is then cooled and the reduction in fuel volume is counteracted with a disposal of fuel in a combustion chamber. An independent claim is also included for a motor vehicle with a motor vehicle heating device.
