The operating method involves supplying of components of internal combustion engine from an electric on-board supply system with on-board power supply voltage with electric energy. The on-board power supply voltage increases if operating parameter shows that the exothermic reaction proceeds in catalyst or if environmental parameter indicates that the exothermic reaction does not proceed in catalyst. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine.
