The (e.g. paper) web (58) is folded parallel to its longitudinal axis, forming a multilayer (10) of two or more layers. This is sent to the printer or copier. A first unit prints an image onto the front of the multilayer. A second unit prints on its rear. The layers are held together by adhesive or electrostatic attraction. Before the first printing, the multilayer is passed between rollers, to remove trapped air and make the multilayer web lie flat. At least one fold may be made along a transverse axis. Individual layers (40, 44) of the web are unfolded after printing, resulting in a web printed on one side. Transverse folds allow use of a quasi-continuous web with a stack (31) : An independent claim is included for the corresponding printer or copier.
