To clean components (10) e.g. of gas turbines for repair, and remove the protective coating (13), at least a part of the surface of the vane (11) is treated with a chemical to break through the coating surface. The broken coating is removed by blasting with aluminum oxide particles and any residue is removed by laser beams. Any surface areas not requiring repair e.g. the vane foot (12), are shrouded by a chemical-resistant material.
