The invention relates to defined fragments derived from proSAAS and determination thereof in biological samples from patients suffering from neurological dementia diseases associated with a loss of short or long term memory, in particular Alzheimer's disease. The proSAAS fragments originate from the protein proSAAS with the corresponding gene, are processed in a specified manner and optionally modified and particularly include peptides comprising hydroxyproline amino acids. A reduction in the concentration of said proSAAS fragments or of the corresponding proSAAS indicates a neurological disease. The detection of said disease is achieved by determination of proSAAS, proSAAS fragments and derivatives thereof. The invention is of use for monitoring the progress of neurological diseases and the prognosis thereof and for the development of therapeutic agents for neurological dementia diseases associated with a loss of short or long term memory such as, for example, Alzheimer's disease.
