Sensor system comprises a safety sensor (18) for securing by fuse a danger zone (27) of a machine (9) or a transport system and a waveguide sensor formed as an auxiliary sensor for monitoring a surrounding region of the machine or transport system. The waveguide sensor has a light receiver which is coupled with the waveguide. The waveguide has several light inlet sites distributed along the length of the waveguide. The light receiver is further connected to an evaluation and control switch which evaluates the received light. The light is converted into an electrical waveguide signal. A control signal is produced by the evaluation and control switch depending on the waveguide received signal. An independent claim is also included for a method for securing by fuse a machine or transport system using the above sensor system.
