The respirator has a chemical cartridge part completely enclosed by a self-sustaining inner protective covering (7) except for openings that open out into a breathing bag. A bottom area of cartridge is covered with a flexible, loosely lying protective cap (11) in a position within a protection container. The covering and the cap are made of shock absorbing, heat insulating and friction reducing effect giving soft and smooth material. The cartridge includes openings and is attached to a breathing bag and a breathing tube. The cartridge part lies in inner side of the bag, which is folded around the cartridge. The cartridge is completely surrounded by the breathing bag and is accommodated in the protection container when it is not in active use. The openings open out into a bottom area in the bag that lies opposite to the breathing tube connection.
