The method involves converting a heart beat signal (9) into a one-dimensional unequally spaced heart-rate raw signal, which is code converted to equi distant signal. Variance portions representing energy peaks of a heart-rate energy spectrum are assigned to predefined frequency bands. A real time parameter representing a vegetative stress level is determined as a function of the variance portions of low and high frequency bands. An independent claim is also included for a device for quantification of vegetative stress levels.
