The method involves having a heat exchanger body (1) installed in a fluid line in such a way that it is exposed to the fluid flow. The heat exchanger body is heated. A calibration curve under measurement of the flow rate and the fluid pressure is taken up in the fluid line, in order to determine the heat transfer conditions in a contamination free heat exchanger body. The heat transfer conditions in the heat exchanger body are supervised by operational measurement of deviations from the calibration curve. An independent claim is included for a device.
