The method involves determining front and back edges of an individual bank note at several positions of a transportation system, and producing a signal. A position of the individual note in the system is determined using the produced signal. An entire width of the system that is provided for transportation of the bank note is monitored at one of the positions for determination of the front and back edges of the bank note. An independent claim is also included for a device for collecting a bank note in a bank note processing machine.
