Preparation of aromatic amines or aliphatic amino alcohols comprises hydrogenating nitro-aromatic compounds or nitro alcohols, respectively in the presence of a catalyst, separating the catalysts from fluid amine- or amino alcohols containing reaction mixture, in a reactor, and measuring the absorption of UV/visible-radiation by the reaction mixture to determine the concentration of nitro and nitroso compounds. An independent claim is included for a device for executing the preparation of aromatic amines or aliphatic amino alcohols.
