Method for measuring the thickness of coating applied to a surface in which a first optical, ultrasonic or mechanical sensor (5) is used to measure the distance from this first sensor to the surface (2), while a second optical, ultrasonic or mechanical sensor (6) is used to measure the distance between itself and the coating (3) surface. The coating thickness is determined as the distance between the two distance values. Independent claims are also included for the following:- (A) two further methods for determining a coating thickness and; (B) a method for determining the height profile of a coating applied to a surface.
