The printer or copier (10) has a pattern generator (11) that includes LED chips (12) arranged in a line, and that can be adjusted by a mechanical shifting device along a character row at a given shifting width before and after producing a latent image on an image carrier (15). An image sensor detects and digitizes the developed latent image to form digitized test patterns. An evaluation unit is connected to the image sensor to process the digitized test patterns. A correction unit is connected to the evaluation unit to correct operation of the LED chips based on the evaluated test patterns. The pattern generator produces the latent image on the image carrier. A developing unit is provided to develop the latent image formed on the image carrier. The evaluation unit processes and compares the digitized test patterns detected by the image sensor. The image sensor detects the latent image in contactless manner. An independent claim is included for the alignment method of the pattern generator.
