The method involves clamping the casing upside down so that the bearing gap (2) faces downwards towards a supporting face of the casing (4) and supporting the bearing cover (6) by a counter holder (30) during the breaking up process. The bearing covers are screwed to the casing prior to breaking so that a certain play is set at the screw fixing of the cover which is to be broken whilst the screws remain tight for the other bearing covers which are not being broken up. Independent claim describes cracking unit with a clamping device (24) for clamping the casing upside down and with a cracking mandrel (10) for breaking the bearing cover from a bearing block (8) and with a holding device to hold the separated cover in a certain position relative to the housing.
