The method involves displaying an arrow (P) on a display unit (3) of a vehicle navigation system corresponding to the progression of a route. Data from digitized map and location information from the system are used for the evaluation of the arrow display. The bend direction of the arrow corresponds to the bend direction of the route and the bend of the arrow is displayed in a reinforced manner based on the bend of the route. An independent claim is also included for a navigation system with an output unit for route references by arrows.
